Mattson cousins
We have one son, Brady, 41, and one daughter, Molly, 38. Brady, his wife, Meghan, and their two daughters (Zoe and Carmin) live in Virginia Beach. Brady followed us down there in 1993 (that was Larry’s last tour of duty) and has been there ever since. He married Meghan in 1995 and the rest is history, as they say. Zoe will be 16 in Sept. Carmin will be 11 in July. Molly and her son, William, 4 on August 12th, live with us. Molly is divorced. She and William moved in when William was 6 weeks old. She divorced the following February. Not a good scene there but she has sole custody now and doesn’t have to deal with the jerk anymore. She is a veterinarian and does well for herself and her son. Brady is a Master Mechanic working for Firestone near them. Both kids are very happy, thank God, and are doing great.
Larry works part-time for Home Depot. He served 26 years in the USN, then taught school for 14 years (biology), sat on his bum for about a year and a half and said to heck with this so got a job working in the electrical dept at our local HD 20 hrs/wk. He likes his co-workers, it gets him out of the house and he gets a little money in return. But he likes it.
I always worked as a medical technologist over my career. I loved that work and ended my career as the lab coordinator at a local hospital here in town. After mom died, I stayed with dad for a time, came back here and trained a new person to do my job and retired in 1993. I was in MN for months helping dad. Then, as you know, 14 months later, dad died and then I had the closing of the estate, to handle. I was there for 4 months and had my hands full. You were there, you know what they had accumulated. It was an overwhelming job with little help. I was the only one not working and could do it. Cindy came when she wasn’t working, Chris came down from Park Rapids as often as she could. Robin and Craig flew in and out to help. We got the job done, donated the home to the fire dept. who did a controlled burn that October, and now we deal with the land. It is up for sale currently but has just been listed with a new company. So, we’ll see what this next chapter brings.
So, since I retired, I’ve been taking care of William every day while Molly goes to work. She just changed jobs, which is much closer, and cut down to part-time so she could spend more time with William. The last place she worked, the vets took call, so she was out a lot. It was good she could just come and go. The new job has no call and all emergencies are sent to the emergency clinic in Portland, about 30 minutes away. What a nice relief not to have to spend all night and all day at her job. Now we both have a life again. And, William loves having his mommy home so much.
Robin and Mark live closeby but have their home up for sale and are moving to NC, hopefully by the fall. They are tired of the cold long winters. I will miss them. They’ve been here as long as we have, over 26 years now.
Craig is in FL, Martha is near the cities, Cindy is in Mankato, and Chris is still in Park Rapids. So, we’re really spread out and don’t see each other often. The last gathering was here for my 60th birthday, 5 years ago. Larry threw a surprise party for me and everyone showed up except Cindy. It was truly a huge surprise and a wonderful birthday present.
Wow, got carried away there with the update but I hope that catches you up a bit. I still hope Levin can come sometime. If he has time off, it’s only a 2 hour drive. We would have room for him to stay if he wanted to.
Take care, keep in touch, love to all,
Susan
